Baltic Film and Media School of Tallinn University (BFM) is a film and media school created in 2005 as a college of Tallinn University, one of the biggest educational institutions in Estonia.

BFM offers hands-on university degree courses in Film Arts, Crossmedia Production, and Audiovisual Media. With over 400 students from more than 20 countries worldwide, BFM is one of Europe's largest - and Northern Europe's only - English-language film and media school.

BFM provides students with free shooting and post-production equipment, studio space and production support for their creative works, supervised by established professionals from the audiovisual industry.

BFM has over 25 partner universities in Europe and China.

The school is situated in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia and the European Capital of Culture in 2011.

Programs

BFM offers following programs:

  • Audiovisual Media- 3-year Bachelor of Arts program and 2- year Master of Arts. Both programs are taught in English. BA program has been a popular choice for new applicants for years. In the 15 years which the AV BA program has been in existence, it has seen many of its graduates assume important positions in media in the Baltic countries. Studies are conducted in a multicultural environment, where students acquire hands-on experience in developing and creating audiovisual work in a variety of formats, including TV programmes, short films, documentaries, music videos, advertising and corporate videos.
  • Crossmedia Production- 3-year Bachelor of Arts program and 2-year Master of Arts program. The Crossmedia programs are taught in English in a multicultural and creative environment where the students are surrounded by their colleagues and an internationally recognized teaching staff from many different countries. BA studies combine IT, management and audiovisual media production, offering both theoretical grounds and exciting practical assignments. The MA program blends the study of audiovisual production for multiple platforms, creative business development and applications for interactive media in an innovative and stimulating program. The MA program is taught jointly with the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Latvia and University of Tartu, Estonia.
  • Film Arts- 3-year Bachelor of Arts and 2-year Master of Arts program with concentrations in directing, producing, sound design, editing and cinematography. The BA program is taught in Estonian and the MA program in English. In the Film Arts program students study theory and putting theory into practice with hands-on training. Among the school's lecturers there are international film makers and professionals, and guest lecturers from the best universities worldwide.
  • Sound and Film Sound Engineering Arts- 2-year Master of Arts program. During the first year, students are supervised individually and in teams by masters in a hands-on learning process. In the second year, students develop and complete their graduation works. The program allows students to focus on practical film sound design, recording and mixing under the supervision of internationally acknowledged professionals. The MA program is taught jointly with the University of Tartu, Estonia.

Equipment and Room Rental

BFM offers the opportunity for people and organizations outside the school to rent the school's shooting equipment and editing rooms for commercial productions. The school has several production and editing rooms for rent: a 161 m² film soundstage, a 112 m² television studio with the service areas, a cinema hall, two sound mixing rooms, 3 sound editing rooms, 8 editing rooms and an 18-seat Apple iMac based computer lab with central SAN media storage.
