Alpha is an upcoming American historical drama film directed by Albert Hughes, with a screenplay by Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt, from a story by Hughes. The film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Leonor Varela and Jens Hultén, and follows a young hunter who befriends an injured wolf during the Ice Age. It is scheduled to be released in the United States by Sony Pictures Releasing on August 17, 2018.

Plot
After a Steppe bison hunting expedition 20,000 years ago in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic period goes awry, a young man struggles against the elements to find his way home, all the while developing a friendship with a gray wolf. This forges the tentative first bond between man and canine.

Production
Development
The film was first announced on September 15, 2015, with Albert Hughes being confirmed as the director. It will be produced by the production company Studio 8, and will also be their first film. It will use the IMAX 3D format. Casting was finalized on February 19, 2016. Kodi Smit-McPhee was confirmed to have joined the cast on November 12, 2015.
Filming
Filming took place in both Vancouver and Drumheller. A large set was built in Boundary Road near East Kent Avenue in Vancouver. Some filming also took place in the city of Burnaby. Later filming took place in Iceland. Filming in Vancouver began on February 22, 2016 and was scheduled to end on May 20. Filming also took place at Dinosaur Provincial Park near Patricia Alberta in April 2016.
The production was investigated after five Alberta bison were allegedly killed for the making of the film.
Release
In June 2017, the film's title was changed from The Solutrean to Alpha. Initially set for a September 15, 2017 release date, it was pushed back to March 2, 2018. In December 2017, it was again delayed, this time rescheduled to September 14, 2018. In April 2018, the release date was moved up to August 17, 2018.
